The Organization

Ohr Simcha (Light of Joy) was founded in Kfar Chabad, Israel, 40 years ago as a nursing home for children of new immigrants to Israel from the former Soviet Union and Bukhara. The institution evolved to welcome children from across the country and was soon recognized by Israel's Ministry of Social Affairs as a therapeutic boarding school for children.

Students come to Ohr Simcha from needy or troubled families.  Most students have very serious problems. They grew up in poverty with parents who are drug addicts, prisoners or otherwise disadvantaged. Some are orphans.  Students represent a range of religious and ethnic backgrounds including Arab and African countries. The children are mostly helpless and in need of a home, security and support.

At Ohr Simcha, children benefit from a warm and loving, peaceful rural environment and a team of dedicated and experienced staff. Teachers give children attention and warmth, and do everything they can to provide the children a balanced education and strong socio-cultural values. Thanks to the devoted care, personal attention and assistance they receive in the school, children are able to develop, recover and move forward as productive members of society.

Our Team and Environment

The Ohr Simcha team numbers about 100 professionals.  The team comes from a diverse background, including teachers, educators, professional therapists, counselors, social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, counselors, mothers, doctors, nurses, mentors, volunteers and tutors. Special emphasis is placed on the condition of each child and each child benefits from a personal care plan.

The boarding school provides a range of services and sports and leisure facilities, such as medical and dental clinic, pedagogical center, petting zoo, fitness club, a playroom, sports courts, billiard rooms and tennis courts, computer rooms, libraries, lawns and other relaxation facilities.

We have a special education grade school that serves the children from first to the 9th grade. The school is recognized by Israel's Department of Education and has special needs classes. The school has classes for Art Therapy, speech therapy, tutoring service, and more.  After school, the children enjoy a variety of social activities and enrichment programs in the fields of art, sports and life skills.

Our Students

The students of the boarding school, many of whom grew-up in unbearable conditions of poverty and hardship, are handicapped educationally and emotionally. They come to the school without the benefit of good learning habits or a solid educations base… some may have never been to school at all. In addition, the circumstances of life have caused most of them to develop learning disabilities, attention deficit disorders and emotional and other serious mental problems. As well, many have low self-esteem and severe emotional problems, damaging their ability to function.

We invest as much as we can in our students training in order that they acquire skills to help them live a better life as contributing members of society.

Please Help US

It is very expensive to operate a boarding school for children with special needs.  We call on you to support our efforts to rehabilitate children at risk and to integrate them into Israeli society.

Your help is very much appreciated, and if you are ever in Israel, please come and visit us at any time. You don’t even have to make an appointment.

Other Ways You can Help

We understand that many people would like to help, but lack the financial means to do so.  If you would like to help, please at least help us spread the word using Tormin.net.

Tormim.net helps us reach out to people. It uses 6 languages and 4 different social media websites. After you make a donation (even a small one), please use the “Share” feature to let your friends know about the work we do and that you support that work.

Thank you most sincerely for your help.

Purim celebration at Ohr Simcha

Date: 3/12/2017 1:20:20 PM

On Thursday March 9, 2017 we had a big Purim celebration at the boarding school. Our kids wore beautiful customs and we celebrate the holiday in our ball room. As you can see our kids enjoyed it and many families joined us for the celebration. The counselors also wore customs. We had pie throwing contests and many of the counselors who were on the receiving end, had to take a long shower afterwards. It was a big event for our children who stayed late and did not want to go to bed. Happy Purim to everyone.
